The strong fluorine-carbon bond and low vapor pressure makes PFOA/PFOS resistant to a number of conventional water treatment technologies, including:

• Direct Oxidation
• Biodegradation
• Air Stripping & Vapor Extraction
• Direct Photolysis (UV)

Recent publications have discussed some bench scale success with degradation or destruction using advanced oxidation and enhanced photochemical methods. However, water treatment methods ultimately must be practical and achieve treatment goals.
Waterform has selected a particular Granular Activated Carbon as the primary method to remove the contaminants of concern with pre-treatment including ozone oxidation to break down organic constituents into more readily removable forms. We have based our study on research undertaken by DuPont USA in 2009 surrounding affordable PFOS / PFOA removal options for municipalities faced with tighter EPA regulations, aimed at establishing the viability of treatment options apart from nanofiltration / reverse osmosis (NF / RO) membranes.

Of critical important to any successful ECT removal project, is the ability to allow for any other constituents in the water (particularly surface water!) such at TOC that will have a very negative impact on the efficacy and lifetime of the selected PFAS removal technology.
